DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

“Veils of Landscape” is an experimental animation that depicts the birth and disappearance of a landscape as if it were breathing before our eyes.

Painted with watercolor and acrylic on multiple transparent layers, the film explores the subtle transformations of nature — how colors merge, dissolve, and reappear like mist drifting through the mountains.

The work began from my experience of painting the satoyama, the rural landscapes of Japan. While observing how pigments spread and blend on paper, I sensed a living rhythm within the materials themselves — a quiet vitality that mirrors the cycles of nature.

Through animation, I sought to extend the act of painting into time, allowing the brushstrokes to move, breathe, and evolve.

In this sense, the film is both a meditation on nature’s impermanence and an exploration of painting as a time-based art form.
